Japanese may be difficult, but learning Japanese will make your life in Japan much easier and it may also help you land an awesome job in the future! There is obviously no better place to learn the Japanese language than in Japan.

What is the JLPT?
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) under joint organization of the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (previously Association of International Education, Japan) started in 1984 as a test to measure and certify the Japanese-language proficiency of those whose native language is not Japanese.
The JLPT has five levels: N1 - N5. The easiest level is N5 and the most difficult level is N1. N4 and N5 measure the level of understanding of basic Japanese mainly learned in class. N1 and N2 measure the level of understanding of Japanese used in a broad range of scenes in actual everyday life. N3 is a bridging level between N1/N2 and N4/N5. A more detailed level summary can be found here.
Because living in Japan is already an advantage for learning the language, a JET who studies a moderate amount a day could reasonably pass the N5 in about 6 months-1 year and N4 in about 1 year- 1.5 years.
Why take it?
JLPT certificates offer various advantages, ranging from recognition as academic credit and graduation certification at schools to preferential treatment at companies and acknowledgement of qualification in society. Also, if you pass, it's free!*
If you are interested in taking the JLPT, please click here for their website.
*CLAIR offers a grant for the full application fee to all JETs who take and pass the JLPT N1, N2, or N3 any time during on the programme. Click here for more information.
