Did you know...
- that JET Accident Insurance will cover the remaining 30% that is not covered by the national health insurance?
- that the JET Accident Insurance covers more than just accidents? It also covers "Loss of Life", "Physical Impediments from Injury", "Loss of Life from Illness", "Medical Expenses from Illness", "Personal Liability", and "Rescue Expenses".
- that the JET Accident Insurance will pay for an interpreter?
- that the JET Accident Insurance includes a "Rescuers' Expense, etc. Endorsement", which will pay for transportation costs of up to 3 family members to come to Japan?

Policy Numbers
Procedure for Filing a Claim
1. JET participant pays for the 30% medical expenses not covered by the Social (Health) Insurance (keep all receipts).
2. Call the insurance company ASAP (within 30 days of an accident or start of an illness). Report the date, time, place, cause, and symptoms of the injury or sickness, and the name of the treating hospital or clinic, to the insurance company.
*For enquiries in English, clearly state “English, please” to be transferred to an English-speaking operator. If you're still having difficulty communicating, please have your daily supervisor call the insurance company on your behalf.
3. The insurance company will make a record of the details and explain how to file a claim for reimbursement. The JET Program participant will need to submit following 3 documents:
4. When all of the necessary documents are ready, send them to the Overseas Travel Insurance Claims Service Division of Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance. The insurance company will, after checking them, arrange for the claims payable to be transferred to the designated bank account.
The following section was taken from pages 59 & 61 of the 2023 JET Program General Information Handbook (GIH):
The JET Accident Insurance Policy covers treatment of illness and injury after you arrive in Japan for the portion of costs not covered by Employees’ Health Insurance, with the requirement that the medical treatment is covered by the Employees’ Health Insurance. Claims can also be made in the event that the JET participant passes away or sustains residual disability. Treatment will be covered in the case where a JET participant becomes ill or injured while temporarily returning to their home country or visiting a third country.

- Physician's statement (on the back side of the Overseas Travel Insurance Claim Form) - may be omitted if the amount claimed is ¥100,000 of less

- Note: As mentioned below under point 3), treatment for illnesses or injuries which existed prior to arrival in Japan (such as asthma, diabetes, etc.) are not covered by the JET Accident Insurance Policy.
3) Costs that are not covered by the JET Accident Insurance Policy
- Loss or damage to personal belongings and household effects
- Treatment of family members’ illnesses or injuries
- Treatment for illnesses or injuries which existed prior to arrival in Japan (including asthma and diabetes)
- Treatment received overseas for an illness or injury sustained in Japan (Excluding treatment in one’s home country where the physician deems it impossible to receive such treatment in Japan)
- Treatment for illnesses or injuries sustained as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, premature birth, or miscarriage
- Dental treatment (cavities, gum disease, etc.)
- Over-the-counter medicine(s)
- Treatment received more than 180 days after the commencement of the treatment of an illness
- Treatment received more than 180 days after an injury caused by an accident
- Liability involving the use of automobiles
- Treatment for injuries sustained in an accident when driving under the influence of alcohol or without valid driver’s license
