Medication
Medicine in Japan is usually in powder or tablet form and is often weaker than in other countries. Powder is usually in one-dose packets and should be swallowed with water. It is likely that you will get different medications for each symptom, which can sometimes mean a lot of different medicines! Make sure you are not being prescribed or taking antibiotics for viral infections such as the common cold, as doing so can increase the chances of building antibiotic resistance.
Medical expenses
Your Employees' Health Insurance that you are paying into covers 70% of the cost of medication (also 70% of medical costs for JET dependents). JET Accident Insurance Policy covers the remaining 30% in some cases (dependents are not covered by this).
Importing medication from abroad
You may have existing medication (for instance birth control pills) or a preference for medication that you cannot buy in Japan or wish to import, whether via post or in person. Japan has very strict regulations regarding this and you will most likely need to apply for a 薬監証明 (yakkan shoumei) certificate, so please make sure you have taken the necessary steps to avoid any complications or trouble. Please see the General Information Handbook (p.27) or click here for a detailed description of what you need to do.
