Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is the Japanese government agency in charge of prevention and mitigation of natural disasters. The agency is in charge of tracking and reporting weather (daily forecasts, typhoons, etc.), earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunami. This is one of the most reliable sources for information. The information is updated frequently and quickly.

Emergency Warning System
The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) launched the Emergency Warning System on August 30, 2013. An Emergency Warning is much different than a regular warning because an Emergency Warning means there is a significant likelihood of a catastrophe. The Emergency Warning is intended for extraordinary phenomena, such as, the major tsunami caused by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. The issuance of an Emergency Warning for an area indicates an exceptional level of risk observed only once every few decades.
If you see/hear an Emergency Warning, please DO NOT ignore it! You may have to take immediate action to ensure your safety! Depending on the situation, you may have to evacuate the area or go to an evacuation center. For more information, please click here to read about the Emergency Warning System on the JMA website.
If you have a smartphone, go to Settings > Notifications and scroll to the bottom to turn on Emergency Alerts. In Japanese, 設定 > 通知 > 緊急速報.
If your phone does not already have an emergency alert setting, please download an application called Safety Tips.
