We need your recommendations! Which resources do you use?
Resources:
Whether online or with the classic hardcopy, there are a plethora of resources available to study Japanese anywhere, any time!
Having trouble deciding which route to take? Buried in resources but don't know where to start?
Have no fear! The Recommended Guide is here!
Recommended Guide to Learning Japanese:
- Learn Hiragana and Katakana (the Japanese “alphabet”)
- Learn vocabulary (with Kanji) and grammar with help from a resource of your choice
- Practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing with material that is interesting to you
- Learn how to use various tools such as online dictionaries
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 with progressively more advanced topics
Still a little lost of what to do?
Courtesy of a previous JET, here's an example route to N1:
N5-N3
START -> July 2016: Come to Japan -> Learn Kana -> CLAIR's Beginner Course-> Tae Kim's Grammar Guide -> Early 2017: Start Wanikani -> CLAIR's Intermediate Course -> Watch Japanese Ammo with Misa Grammar Lessons for Absolute Beginners Playlist -> N5-N4 Lessons on Bunpro -> Early 2018: Reach Level 60 in Wanikani -> N3 lessons on Bunpro -> July 2018: Take N3
N2
Tobira* -> Core 2k Memrise Course -> N2 Lessons on Bunpro -> Nihongo No Mori N2 Grammar Playlist -> Shin Kanzen N2 Grammar -> Sou Matome N2 Vocabulary -> Read 15 books in Japanese** -> July 2019: Take N2
N1
Nihongo No Mori N1 Grammar Playlist -> Shin Kanzen N1 Grammar -> Sou Matome N1 Vocabulary -> Read 25 books in Japanese** -> December 2019: Take N1 -> FINISH!
*It is usually recommended to start Tobira before you take the N3. The above is just what a previous JET did, but that doesn't mean it's the best way to do it! It's just an example of one person's journey.
** Read during the entirety of the year and while using the other resources for grammar and vocabulary study.
