Alcohol abuse
Living in a new foreign country with no or few family or friends can be very stressful. This stress, plus the drinking culture in Japan can easily lead to alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence. Alcohol abuse is the intentional overuse of alcohol and it can quickly lead to alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence (alcoholism) is a disease in which a person has impaired control over their use of alcohol. The "pleasure pathways" deep in their brains change and their bodies and minds develop a strong need to drink. This is a chronic disease, and like other chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, etc.), it requires long-term treatment and serious changes in lifestyle - for example, quitting drinking completely.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Can you consistently keep promises to yourself about your drinking?
- Do others have a different version of your drinking than you do?
- Are you paying an emotional price?
- Do you violate your own values when you drink and during recovery?
- Did you lie to yourself when you answered the first four questions?
For more easy-to-digest information on alcohol abuse or addiction, check out this site.
(NB: The organization is based in the US so not all helplines, etc. will be applicable from Japan; however this is a great resources in general.)
If you or someone you know needs help, please contact your PA or look into Alcoholics Anonymous.
