Living in a foreign culture can be difficult or stressful. Whether you are experiencing culture shock or generally need someone to speak to, don't feel like you have to endure anything on your own. Reach out to friends, family, fellow JETs, and/or your PA, or contact another one of the numbers below.

Services:
Kyoto City International Foundation
- Free mental health counseling with a clinical psychotherapist is offered 4 times a year at the Kyoto International Community House. Check here for this year's dates.
JET Mental Health Counselling Assistance Programme
- With the aim of enhancing mental health support for JET participants, CLAIR offers the JET Mental Health Counselling Assistance Programme. This programme provides a partial subsidy (50%, up to ¥20,000 per year) for counselling costs incurred through consultation with mental health professionals in Japan not covered by health insurance. The coverage period is from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025. For further information, please ask your contacting organisation.
- Note: For Prefectural ALTs, you do not have to submit this paperwork through your school if you would prefer not to. You can submit it directly to the P.A.
JET Online Counseling Service (Provided by CLAIR)
- The aim is to provide professional mental health counseling, in English, for free, via e-mail and/or Skype. There is a password require to use this service. Please contact your PA for access.
Finding a mental health specialist in Kyoto and beyond

Tokyo English Life Line (TELL)
- 03-5774-0992 (9am-11pm daily)
- Free anonymous English telephone counseling and support across Japan. Telephone counselors are trained to respond to emergency crisis calls, as well as offering emotional support for everyday problems, relationship issues and stress, for all ages and cultural backgrounds.
AJET Peer Support Group (PSG)
- 050-5534-5566 or voice call via Skype at AJETPSG (8pm-7am daily)
- AJET (Association of JETs) has a helpline to support JET Program participants in Japan. It is a confidential and anonymous listening and referral service, available from 8:00 pm to 7:00 am every night of the year (hours when other resources such as TELL or PAs may not be available).
