Maizuru's Tanabe Castle Festival (田辺城まつり)
This festival is held every year on the 4th weekend in May. It celebrates Maizuru's castle, Tanabe Castle. The castle gate was rebuilt in the 90's at the ruins of the castle. This festival is known locally for the samurai procession. Also, every year there is a different main attraction. In 2012 it was a samurai gun show, 2013 was a daimyo procession, and 2014 was a sword performance by children. There are many different food vendors and it is a fun atmosphere. It is a good excuse to get out and enjoy some Japanese culture.
The Tango Region
The Tango Region
Far north of Kyoto City, tragically beyond the end of convenient train schedules, the Sea of Japan surrounds a peninsula almost as large as Kyoto City itself. This is the Tango region, which comprises most of what you might know as “Kyoto by the sea.”
